Holidays to Hill Country with If Only

Striking mountains are carpeted with lush green tea gardens and roaring waterfalls mingle with the clouds in Sri Lanka's Hill Country - a world away from the golden beaches off the coast. To the north of the region, the legacy of the last independent kingdom lives on in Kandy, through distinctive music, dance and architecture. The south of the region was shaped by British colonies who introduced tea to the island, now one of the biggest industries in the country.

Highlights

Lush scenery, hill stations and tea plantations offer a contrast to the beach resorts.

Hill Country

The towering summit of Adam's Peak is both one of Sri Lanka's most striking national landmarks and one of its most important places of pilgrimage thanks to its significance to all of the major faiths in Sri Lanka. The hike to the top is usually made at night to watch the spectacular sunrise from the summit - well worth getting out of bed for.

At an altitude of 500m, Kandy is the cultural centre of Sri Lanka and was the capital of the last Singhalese kingdom - now one of the country's eight World Heritage Sites. A relaxed hill station, it is dominated by its lake and the Temple of the Tooth which houses Sri Lanka's most sacred relic - The Tooth of Lord Buddha. Continue from Kandy to Ella by train - the most famous stretch of train travel in Sri Lanka and one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. Travel past tea plantations, mountains and waterfalls and snack on freshly cut pineapple or homemade curry purchased from the sellers who board the train during stops.

Sample local tea

Ceylon tea is one of Sri Lanka's primary exports and a visit to the country wouldn't be complete without trying a cup at the source. Nuwara Eliya is perfectly positioned to produce some of the best tea and offer the complete tea experience. Take a guided tour of a local tea factory or purchase a pack or two to take home.
