Day 1
The city of Tokyo is a sprawling metropolis of neighbourhoods ranging from the tiny bars of Shinjuku’s Golden Gai and the culinary delights plus shopping meccas of Nihonbashi to the pottery shops of Asakusa and the electronic gadgets and manga culture in Akihabara. Days are easily spent here traversing from area to area and immersing yourself in this ever-popular city.
Days 2 - 3
Heading to the charming city of Osaka, soak up everything from amazing cuisine, superb shopping and friendly spirit. The restored Osaka Castle offers up a lesson in Japanese history and culture or take in a 360-degree view from Japan’s tallest skyscraper, Abeno Harukas. Also within reach is the immensely historical city Kyoto that is filled with spectacular architecture, including thousands of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
Days 4 - 5
Escaping the city, Beppu is a glimpse into Japan’s more relaxed side. Perched on the hillside, the island bubbles with life thanks to the hot springs and visitors can enjoy a variety of bath types from heated sand to traditional steam or hot mud at one of the country’s most popular spots for a long, hot soak.
Day 6
Travelling to the next port of call, day six traverses the Kanmon Strait. The waterway separates Konshu and Kyushi, two islands famous for their historical importance and scenic beauty. Spend the day admiring the scenery and learning about the strait or enjoy all the ship has to offer, from the infinity-edge plunge pool to the eight spaces onboard to eat and drink.
Day 7
Nagasaki is a unique blend of cultures from around the world with European-style homes and fusion cuisine. A popular local delight, Castella sponge cake was introduced by Portuguese missionaries while Japan’s oldest Chinatown offers up its own take on Chinese food. The vibrant city is also synonymous with the dropping of the second atomic bomb making a visit to Nagasaki’s Peace Park a completely necessary and deeply moving experience.
Day 8
A quick visit to South Korea to Busan, experience the exceptional beaches, scenic cliffs and ancient temples that mean the country’s second largest city is often referred to as “the summer capital of South Korea”.
Day 9
Back in Japan and on the western coast of Honshu Island is the hidden gem of Sakaiminato. An immersive journey into small-town ambiance, take in the artwork that celebrates the iconic Yokai World before heading to the bustling fish market to taste the freshest catches of the day.
Day 10
Experience serenity in Kanazawa with the beautifully preserved tea houses and at Kenrokuen Gardens, one of Japan’s most exquisite year-round landscapes gardens. Continue this peaceful journey at the innovative exhibits of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art or dive into a faster pace at Omicho Market where fresh seafood and local delicacies are a delight for the senses.
Day 11
Continuing to explore every side of Japan, Akita homes Japan’s deepest lake framed by verdant forests and engulfed by snow-capped mountains. The region also has a fascinating history with well-preserved samurai residences available to visit.
Day 12
Before returning to the city, embrace one last day of natural beauty in Hakodate. The abundance of hot springs makes for a full body experience while the miniaturised hot spring baths are designed to soak one’s feet. To pick up any last-minute souvenirs, the old red-brick buildings of the Bay Area have been converted into a unique mall.
Day 13
A full day at sea while cruising the Pacific Ocean on return to Tokyo is a last chance to take in the delights offered onboard Seven Seas Explorer®.
