Day 5

The first stop of this amazing trip calls at Ketchikan, Alaska. Famous for their totem poles, one of the best places to view the famous attractions are Saxman Village and Totem Bight State Park. Eager to learn about the local culture and ecosystems? Drop by the Southeast Alaska Discovery Centre.

Day 6

Originally named “Shee Atika” by the Tlingit Indians and then “New Archangel” by the Russians who ousted them, Stika boasts a multicultural heritage worth exploring. Two dozen of its attractions are on the National Register of Historic Places, including structures built by the Russians that date back to 1835. Another showcase of their heritage, the Sheldon Jackson Museum exhibits one of Alaska’s oldest native culture collections.

Delving further into Alaska, Haines was first settled by Tlingit Indians and it’s easy to see why. Nestled along America’s longest fjord, the gorgeous Lynn Canal, the nature filled Haines is incredibly beautiful while brown bears, moose and bald eagles are plentiful.

From a Tlingit Indian stronghold to a Russian outpost to finally an American settlement in 1867, the area of Wrangell has endured dramatic changes and now honours its rich history. Visitors can see a preserved tribal house on Chief Shakes Island, learn about the three gold rushes that transformed the area and behold the ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks on the nearby beaches.

Say goodbye to Alaska as you sail back through the Inside Passage, made up of a complex labyrinth of fjords, bays and lush green islands. This may be the last chance to spot the abundance of native wildlife before winter ascends. Look out for orca whales, mountain goats, bald eagles, bears, puffins and sea otters just to name a few.
