Take in Sri Lanka’s most iconic sites. Habarana forms the perfect base to reach the historical and cultural hotspots of ancient Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya’s rock fortress and Dambulla caves, before exploring the island’s tea plantations and colonial past. Take a jeep safari to catch a glimpse of the leopards of Yala before ending your trip with a relaxing beach stay on Sri Lanka’s west coast.

place DAY 1 - Negombo

Negombo

Arrive into Colombo and transfer to Negombo where the rest of your day will be at leisure.

place DAY 2 - Negombo - Habarana

Negombo - Habarana

Travel to Habarana stopping on the way to take an exciting afternoon safari into Minneriya Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can see Sri Lankan wild animals in their natural state, including wild boar, elephants and bears. Elephants gather at the waterholes for drinking and bathing with their young. Herds of deer roam close by while beautiful peacocks flaunt their colourful feathers.

This morning there’s a fabulous optional cooking class with a professional chef using vegetables grown on the hotel’s own small farm. In the afternoon, visit the ancient ruined city of Polonnaruwa, the UNESCO World Heritage site remains one of the country’s best planned archeological sites.

Venture to the Lion’s Rock, Sigiriya stone fortress. This iconic 5th century site is one of seven World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka. It’s possible to climb the 1200 steep steps to the top of Sigiriya if you wish. Afterwards, you’ll continue to Dambulla cave temples, a large and wonderfully preserved rock temple complex, towering 160 metres over the surrounding plains.

place DAY 5 - Habarana - Kandy

Habarana - Kandy

Drive into the hills and tea growing areas stopping by a local village. Discover the pleasant town of Kandy, its scenic lake and the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, said to house a tooth of the Buddha, is a magnificently adorned shrine, with exquisitely decorated walls, moat, turrets, golden roof and fine woodwork. Attend a Kandyan cultural show and don’t miss Kandy’s lovely botanical garden where a huge range of tropical and sub-tropical plants thrive.

Kandy

Enjoy a day at leisure to unwind or explore more of Kandy. Optional ideas include an excursion to historic Udawattakele forest for wildlife and bird watching.

place DAY 7 - Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

Travel from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, sightseeing Sri Lanka's beautiful tea growing regions en route, including a visit to a working tea factory and estate. On arrival at Nuwara Eliya, tour the town and then spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Don't miss the opportunity to visit Horton Plains National Park, a protected preserve which is covered by montane grassland and cloud forest. This park is home to a range of mammals including large herds of Sri Lankan Sambar Deer and also contains a Bird sanctuary with numerous endemic bird species.

place DAYS 9 - 10 - Nuwara Eliya - Yala

Nuwara Eliya - Yala

Depart on the the five-hour journey towards Yala, calling at Seetha Amman, a temple which played an important role in the Hindi epic, the Ramayana. Embark on thrilling jeep safaris venturing into Yala National Park. The semi-arid park covers 380 square miles and hosts a varied ecosystem ranging from moist monsoon forests to freshwater and marine wetlands. Most significantly, it houses one of the highest leopard densities in the world.

place DAYS 11 - 15 - Galle

Galle

Drive to Galle, stopping in Ahangama to see the stilt fishermen who still practice traditional fishing methods perched on branched poles. Explore Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and enjoy the coastal area offers fabulous opportunities for dining, shopping. Spend four relaxing nights on the beach before travelling home.
