High beamed ceilings accommodate vast four-poster beds, swathed in billowing drapes and outside seating areas give access to the lush gardens. Retire to the Verandah, a delightful restaurant with a shady terrace and a peaceful spot for evening drinks as the sun moves over the yard arm. There’s a delightful spa, where better to unwind after a long flight and a range of experiences available including cookery classes demonstrations with the hotel chefs, or if you can tear yourself away from the peace and tranquillity, Negombo’s lively fish markets and vast mangrove lagoons can be visited, Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo is also only a 30-minute drive.

The Wallawwa is boutique in the true sense of the word and more akin to staying in a charming country house rather than an hotel. 18 rooms and suites offer the character and elegance of the 18th century with all the creature comforts on the 21st. Four poster beds waft with billowing linens, high ceilings and sleek furniture adds to the sense of style whilst vibrant, contemporary prints add a retro feel. All rooms have access to the gardens, but the spacious suites offer private, furnished terraces and the Mountbatten Suite boasts a private garden with a plunge pool.

The Verandah is an utterly beautiful, open-sided restaurant serving up delicious cuisine including a sumptuous high tea, throughout the day. Bread is baked daily for breakfast whilst the all-day menu dishes up an array of superb seafood and curries. Dine inside by the light of gently flickering hurricane lamps or outside on the shady terrace beneath the lazy rotating of the ceiling fans overheard, as you gaze out over the tropical gardens. It’s also a delightful spot for evening drinks in the balmy night air with the sounds of the tropics as your accompaniment. It’s a memorable place for a last meal on the teardrop isle.

After a long-haul flight or day travelling in the hot sun, the stone-lined 16m pool is a welcome sight, surrounded by the jungle, giving it a truly tropical feel. It’s tucked away out of sight and a terrace lined with plump-cushioned sun loungers is just calling out to you, to stop take a swim, and linger a while. In the cool of the interior there’s a library of prized books that will warm the heart of any literary lover, it’s a peaceful place to curl up with a favourite tome and a cup of Sri Lankan tea. There’s also a gift shop selling local crafts, which support the community.

Z Spa is a serene and tranquil haven designed around a zen-like central courtyard and offers single and couples treatment rooms. Treatments and therapies include signature massages, scrubs and wraps using Asian techniques with just a touch of Ayurveda and all use Sri Lankan products based around the therapeutic benefits of tea. There are no set hours, the pampering is scheduled to fit around you. Many of the treatments are designed specifically to treat the effects of flying and it’s the perfect way to start a Sri Lankan holiday. Z Spa even offers a children’s massage for young spa goers.
