14 luxurious cabins lie dotted through the dunes, boasting shady decks and private plunge pools. A stay at Chena Huts is all inclusive and meals are enjoyed in Basses, a delightful open-air restaurant, or by a beach bonfire, or on the lake shore - nothing it too much trouble. Relaxation comes in the form of a beautiful day spa and a tree-lined swimming pool, which also boasts a magical pool bar, hidden away behind a waterfall. There is also the most glorious expanse of deserted beach washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Blissful days here include fully guided morning and evening game drives accompanied by an expert ranger, where you will explore the Yala National Park. This is Sri Lanka’s oldest national park and home to the greatest population of leopards in the world. Other wildlife to keep your eyes peeled for includes elephants, turtles, crocodiles, and more than 200 species of birds, of which the showy and flamboyant peacock is one.

14 detached cabins are set within the secluded dunes, with paths winding down to the sea and offer a truly private and exclusive wilderness experience. The word cabin is however a huge contradiction in terms, for these are as far from a cabin as you can imagine. The low impact design and soft footprint ensures that these luxurious pavilions sit in perfect harmony with the landscape yet bring a gentle sense of safari to this deserted beach. Spacious living areas, super-comfy timber beds and ensuite bathrooms with soaking bathtubs are complemented by shady decks with private plunge pools and blissful seclusion.

Chena Huts by Uga is an all-inclusive concept and includes all meals, beverages, and game drive refreshments. Basses’ restaurant takes its name from the nearby reef and lighthouse and is a charmingly rustic open-air space serving up exceptional food, whilst the bar is a convivial spot to enjoy a handcrafted cocktail as the sun goes down. Guests are also welcomed to dine on the beach under a canopy of stars, alongside the flickering glow of a beach barbecue or on the shores of the lagoon. The opportunities for private dining are endless.

Two safari game drives per day through the Yala National Park are included, one morning and one late afternoon. This national park covers several biomes including monsoon, grassland, freshwater, and marine wetland giving habitat and protection to more than 40 species of mammal and dozens of reptiles. It is also renowned for having the highest density of leopards in the world, whilst the lagoon environment plays host to hundreds of resident and migrant birds. Excursions further afield can also be organised on request. There is plenty of time to wander the shoreline and relax by the beautiful pool between game drives.

Set in the tranquil Sri Lankan wilderness this is a truly memorable spa experience. The Uga Spa is a place where, in the most secluded of environments, you can take time out from your adventures and travels to relax and unwind and let the talented therapists work their magic. The choice of treatments includes a range of massages, body rituals including wraps and scrubs plus facials and signature therapies. For an intimate and very personal experience you can also arrange to enjoy a treatment in the privacy of your accommodation (an additional charge applies).

Approximately a 1 hour 20 minute drive from the airport

Southern Sri Lanka boasts the best weather between November and April, with most of the heavy rainfall falling in September and October. The UK's winter is also the best time for surfers to enjoy the waves near Weligama, although this is a good destination all year round for beginners.
