Overview

A standard-bearer for excellence on Madeira for over a century, Reid's Palace, A Belmond Hotel, Madeira’s timeless atmosphere has long attracted VIPs past and present. Its roll-call of celebrities began with Empress Elisabeth I of Austria and other notable guests include writer George Bernard Shaw, members of the British Royal Family and Winston Churchill, who’s stay in the hotel is remembered by the Winston Churchill Suite. Set on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Funchal and Atlantic Ocean, views are simply stunning, and lush gardens invite guests to relax and enjoy the island’s sub-tropical climate. Traditionally styled rooms are the epitome of elegance and dining options are equally sophisticated, with Michelin-starred cuisine and delicious Italian specialities just a few of the experiences on offer.

Climate

Portugal’s Mediterranean climate results in hot, dry summers and mild winters. June to August is the time to visit for sun-soaked days accompanied by pleasant sea breezes. Spring and Autumn are good times for a quieter visit without the summer season crowds, with March to May seeing the country’s flowers come into bloom and many festivals take place, whilst September to October offer an extension to northern Europe’s summer, as the sun continues to shine, and temperatures remain in the 20s until the end of the main tourist season in late October. Winters are mild with more rain than at other times of the year, but a generally pleasant climate in which to explore.
