Holidays to Makgadikgadi & The Kalahari with If Only

One of the largest salt pans in the world, the Makgadikgadi Pans cover over 10,000 kilometres square of the vast Kalahari. Remnants of an ancient super lake, the lunar-like shimmering expanses of white salt stretch as far as the eye can see and are home to unique desert-adapted animals including hyenas, meerkats and springbucks. The rainy season introduces shallow mineral-rich lakes to the area and with them wondrous wildlife and a fantastic variety of birdlife. The Kalahari’s indigenous Bushmen live happily alongside the animals and invite visitors to learn more about their culture and way of life.

Marvel at the zebra migration

Marvel at the zebra migration

From December to March, once the rains have arrived in the Makgadikgadi, visitors are treated to the annual migration of zebras from the Boteti River. Attracted by the lush nutrient-rich grasses that surround the pans, this is a fantastic time to see these striking animals en masse.

A year-round wonder

Visit the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans during the dry season and explore the vast expanses of salt and sand, scorched beneath the sun’s rays, by road, quad bike or horseback, keeping your eyes peeled for the popular meerkats that call the area home. During the wet season, the landscape is transformed, with lush greenery appearing. Flamingos give the area a pink tinge from afar, skylarks soar high in the sky, and beneath them, African wildlife explores the land.
