Luggage

If you are travelling to a lodge that is accessed via light aircraft then do bear in mind that the weight limit for your luggage is likely to be less than that of your international airline. Charter flights will often have a maximum baggage allowance of 15kg and specify the use of a soft sided bag. Fear not though, as the majority of camps will offer a daily laundry service - often this is complimentary - so you can pack light and get yur clothes washed as you go.

Clothing

Light weight clothing is not only key for adhering to luggage restrictions, but also perfect for keeping cool in the hot mid-day temperatures. Cotton and linen materials are ideal and try to stick with neutral colours such as khaki, beige and olive. Don't feel the need to go out and buy a whole new 'safari-chic' wardrobe, but if possible, avoid very bright colours. In many African countries camouflage patterned clothing is not permitted as this is associated with the military. You'll find that even in the most luxurious of lodges people keep things casual and during evening meals mosy will be sporting their safari gear.

Layers

Temperatures can vary a lot on safari, chilly mornings make way for very warm days and the air can become cool again quickly when the sun goes down so layers are your friend! A light scarf is useful for keeping cosy and, also very handy if your drive gets a bit dusty.

Footwear

A good pair of trail shoes or hiking boots should be on your packing list if you're planning on doing a walking safari. However for general game drives where you are in the vehicle and for around camp, a lighter pair of trainers or flat sandals will be just fine.

Eye & Headwear

Safari vehicles often have open sides and although the drives are generally early in the morning and later in the afternoon, you can be in the sun a lot so a cap or wide brimmed hat are key items to pack. While sunglasses may seem an obvious item, do remember to also take a case for them along with a lens cleaner. If you normally wear contact lenses then it is recommended to take a pair of glasses also.
