This self-drive itinerary begins in the cosmopolitan city of Boston, Massachusetts and journeys around the north-eastern states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Explore charming lighthouses and rugged coastlines, enjoy pristine beaches and quaint seaside towns and indulge in the delicious seafood delicacies and spectacular mountain vistas that New England has to offer. This is a trip that can be taken year-round, but one that is particularly spectacular during fall thanks to the striking autumn foliage.

place DAYS 1 - 3 - Boston

Boston

Discover the rich past and vibrant present of one of America’s oldest cities, Boston, which can be easily explored on foot. Wander the cobbled streets of the Beacon Hill District, ponder the infamous Boston Tea Party and follow the Freedom Trail which passes through 16 significant locations in America’s history. Head to Boston Common, Faneuil Hall Marketplace or browse Boston’s fantastic selection of shops, galleries and museums. With a buzzing restaurant scene there are plenty of culinary experiences to be enjoyed, from fresh seafood and outstanding sushi to traditional cannoli and roast beef sandwiches, to name a few.

place DAY 4 - Freeport

Freeport

After picking up your hire car, visit the first stop on today’s route, the infamous town of Salem, famous for the 1692 witch trials in which several locals were executed for allegedly practicing witchcraft. Continue north, taking in charming lighthouses and New Hampshire’s oldest community, Portsmouth, and stop at one of the many breweries to sample some local craft beers. Enjoy a stroll around Kennebunkport’s quaint cafés, chic boutiques, art galleries and palatial summer estates of the rich and powerful which sit proudly along the shoreline. A stop in Portland, Maine for a lobster dinner is another tasty diversion. Finally stop at Freeport, your home for the night, where you won’t want to miss the outlet stores that this town is famous for.

place DAYS 5 - 6 - Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor

Situated on Mount Desert Island, known for its stunning coastline and as the gateway to the Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor captivates visitors with a laid-back maritime ambience. Soak up the views over Frenchman’s Bay and, after relaxing for a couple of days, head southwest back into New Hampshire to North Conway, nestled on the edge of the White Mountains.

Explore the hiking trails of the White Mountains, along with the enchanting covered bridges, picturesque white-washed villages, and natural beauty of the region.

place DAYS 8 - 9 - Stowe

Stowe

Take scenic Route 112 west through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest, particularly impressive during September and October during fall foliage season. End the day in the alpine resort of Stowe, Vermont. Hike, bike or just enjoy the glorious vistas and visit the crystal waters of Lake Champlain.

Heading south back into Massachusetts, explore this rural region in the mountains, dotted with idyllic New England towns and villages. Farm-to-table food, music festivals and outdoor activities can be enjoyed in abundance.

Drive southeast into the USA’s smallest state, Rhode Island, and you’ll find Newport, a quintessential New England coastal city. Think smart harbours packed with sailing boats and yachts plus grand mansions nestled on the shores and scenic cliff walks.

Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard & Nantucket

Idyllic coastal playgrounds await in Cape Cod. Picturesque harbour towns, pastel coloured beachfront lobster and crab shacks, and endless stretches of pristine beach. Day trips to the island nirvanas of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are a must. After your stay in Cape Cod it's a short drive back to Boston the next morning where you will return your hire car before your international flight home.
